An Annual meeting of experts was held on 27 and 28 November 2007 at the main office of the European Monitoring Centre for Drugs and Drug Addiction (EMCDDA) in Lisbon, under the ‘Drug-related deaths and mortality among drug users’ indicator. Experts from 30 countries participated in it. The Bulgarian party was represented by Elena Georgieva, expert in ‘International Cooperation’ at NFP and Dr. Elka Ivanova, forensic examiner at the ‘Alexandrovska’ MPHAT.
An analysis was made at the meeting of the situation under this indicator in the countries of Europe, the European Union and Australia. The introductory report was presented by Julian Vicente.
Touched upon were various aspects of the theme of mortality among drug addicts: toxicology, substitute therapy and mortality, methods of data collection, methodology of studying and assessing the results.
Workshops during the second day also formed part of the meeting, as well as the presentation of investigations in different European countries. In conclusion plans were devised for future studies in this direction.
